Big Boi Talks New Album "Sir Luscious Left Foot"
Posted: Wednesday - July 21, 2010 | Comments (0)

Big BoiFresh off the release of his critically acclaimed album, Sir Luscious Left Foot; the Son of Chico Dusty, Yo! Raps caught up with Big Boi as he prepared to hit the stage for this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

The album is chock full of dizzying rhymes and funky rhythms. Featuring artists like Yelawolf, George Clinton, Too Short, Janelle Monae and Vonnegut, the line up couldn’t be more diverse. Big Boi is in top form as he showers the production of greats like Andre 3000 (You Ain’t No DJ) with spasmodic metaphors.

Donning the alias, Sir Luscious Left Foot, there is an unmistakable flavor and familiarity with the fervor in which Big Boi makes his case as one of the hottest in the game. Tracks to note include Fo Yo Sorrows with the aforementioned George Clinton and Too Short, and Shine Blockas featuring fellow ATLien, Gucci Mane.

Yo! Raps checks in with the son of Chico Dusty to talk Organized Noize, funk, and the subject of a classic OutKast line.

What’s your favorite track from “Sir Luscious Left Foot”?

Well it has changed since last week. Last week it was Fo Yo Sorrows, this week it’s You Ain’t No DJ. The beat cranks. It was produced by Andre 3000 and features my boy Yelawolf, an up and coming artist. It’s straight up venomous spit and the beat just bangs.  If you got a system in your car, or even in your house, it bangs. It’ll rock your girl to sleep too.

Tell me about Fo Yo Sorrows, it’s definitely one of the standout tracks.

Absolutely, I think so. I got the beat from Organized Noize and it was actually one of the first songs I wrote and recorded in 2007. I got on it, did what I had to do on it and added some funk and synthesizers then called George [Clinton] and Too Short. I wanted to get Too Short’s voice on there because I wanted to actually hear him say “Bitch.” It was two of my favorite artists so I wanted them on the album for sure. It’s funky, it’s real funky.

One of your most memorable lines includes a shout out to your Uncle Donnell, locked up in prison. How is he?

[Laughs] He’s out, and he’s doing great. He would have been with us today in Chicago but he can’t travel right now. He’s doing real well though. He’s about to open up a rib shack. My cousin Ricky Walton is out too. Everybody is out of jail. The whole family and everybody is doing good.
